First wash
For the first wash, soak in cold water for 15 minutes — no detergent. If you want to set the natural dyes, add 2 tablespoons of salt to the water. This locks in pigments and minimises bleeding on later washes.
Everyday washing
- Hand-wash with cold water and a mild, pH-neutral soap.
- For premium batik tulis and natural-dye series (Liris Loka), use lerak (Indonesian soapberry) — the traditional, plant-based cleanser.
- Avoid machine wash, bleach, fabric softener, and the dryer.
- Wash darks separately. Never twist or wring — press water out gently.
Drying & ironing
- Air-dry flat or on a padded hanger, in the shade. Direct sun fades pigments.
- Iron from the inside on low heat (silk/synthetic setting). Use a cotton press cloth on the right side if needed.
- Steam works beautifully — set it to wool or low.
Storage
- For batik tulis, store rolled in tissue rather than hung — folding creases the wax memory.
- Keep away from moisture and direct light. A few cloves or dried lavender deter moths.
- Avoid plastic bags long-term — natural fibres need to breathe.
